In-Situ Treatment of Soil Contaminated by Benzene (A BTEX Compound)

چکیده

Introduction Gasoline is a complex solution of different hydrocarbons. Naturally occurring petroleum contains aromatic hydrocarbons, a class of unsaturated hydrocarbons that includes benzene, toluene, ethylenzene, and xylene (collectively known as BTEX). Since the EPA banned lead additions to gas in 1973, aromatic hydrocarbons were added to increase the octane concentration, thereby maximizing the burn rate of gasoline in the engine cylinders (Cole 1994). Unleaded and premium gasoline contains 4% and 5% benzene by weight, respectively (Cole 1994).

Stable Isotope Probing Identifies Novel m-Xylene Degraders in Soil Microcosms from Contaminated and Uncontaminated Sites

The remediation of groundwater contaminated with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and the xylenes (BTEX) typically involves in situ biodegradation. Although the mechanisms of aerobic BTEX biodegradation in laboratory cultures have been well studied, less is known about the microorganisms responsible in mixed culture samples or at contaminated sites. In this study, the microorganisms responsible ...

Enhanced in situ bioremediation of BTEX-contaminated groundwater by combined injection of nitrate and sulfate.

Enhancement of in situ anaerobic biodegradation of BTEX compounds was demonstrated at a petroleum-contaminated aquifer in Seal Beach, CA. Specifically, combined injection of nitrate and sulfate into the contaminated aquifer was used to accelerate BTEX removal as compared to remediation by natural attenuation. An array of multi-level sampling wells was used to monitor the evolution of the in sit...

Influence of soil components on the biodegradation of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-, m-, and p-xylenes by the newly isolated bacterium Pseudoxanthomonas spadix BD-a59.

A bacterium designated strain BD-a59, able to degrade all six benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-, m-, and p-xylene (BTEX) compounds, was isolated by plating gasoline-contaminated sediment from a gasoline station in Geoje, Republic of Korea, without enrichment, on minimal salts basal (MSB) agar containing 0.01% yeast extract, with BTEX as the sole carbon and energy source. Taxonomic analyses...

Chemical Oxidation Techniques for in Situ Remediation of Hydrocarbon Impacted Soils

Increasing concerns over health and ecological impacts of contaminated sites are leading to the development of cost effective remediation techniques for reducing the mass, mobility and/or toxicity of contaminated soils and groundwater. Amongst these, in situ chemical oxidation techniques are evolving as an effective way of remediating contaminated soil. In situ chemical oxidation involves the i...
